Eastoke Cougars from Div 4 defeated Div 3 side Unison Green 5-4 despite John Ruse's maximum. John Davey and Jim Broad both scored a brace for the winning outfit. Div 4 champions Cowplain Sapphire beat Div 2 runners-up SESA Perseus 5-4 in their quarter final. Paul Tinsley and John Amey won two apiece for the victors, while Alan Bland fared likewise for Perseus. In the other quarter final Cowplain Blue won a tricky contest 5-1 against fellow div 1 side BCA Red. Richard Billings and Robin Plunkett both won twice. In the first semi final Eastoke Cougars beat last years finalists Dark Red 5-4 with Eric Saunders the star player with a hat trick. John Peters won two for the beaten trio.In the other semi final holders Cowplain Blue found the handicaps too tough against Cowplain Sapphire who cruised to a 5-0 victory with their team of Paul Tinsley, John Amey and Paul Tomsett. Only Billings won a leg in his encounter with Tinsley.The final was won 5-2 by Sapphire over Cougars with John Amey unbeaten. Eric Saunders beat Tinsley and Jim Broad got the better of Tomsett to give Cougars some consolation. _______________________________________________________________________________ Apr 2009 - Stannard Shield Competition Round-up The Stannard Shield for veteran players produced some dramatic matches in the last three matches of this competition. Unison Orange from Division two lost 5-4 to Div 3 side Cowplain Emerald in the semi final. The first four rubbers finished all square with Peter Mclellan beating Russell Voysey and Eric Harvey overcoming Oranges Malcolm DEacon.In the second sequence Peter Mclellan won both his games, but Eric Harvey lost both his. So the match was decided in the doubles which Emerald won 22-20 in the deciding set having been given a 4 point start. Cowplain Cocktails beat Division one runners up Cowplain Blue 5-4. Robin Plunkett and Pete Woodacre played for Blue, while Cocktails were represented by Steve Long and Roger Winkworth. All the players beat each other once and lost once, so the match went to the doubles again which Cocktails won in the final leg. In the final Roger Winkworth won all his four singles, but first Ray Tller and next Steve Long couldn't add to Cocktails tally. Emerald's pair of Harvey and Mclellan won the doubles in three sets to take the cup by 5 rubbers to four. _______________________________________________________________________________ Mar 2009 - Portsmouth Closed Results The first event was the veterans singles. Charlie Childs beat Pete Woodacre and Steve Long in his group to progress to the final.Mike Rhodes overcame Bill Moody and Sven Lind to join Childs in the final. Childs won the final 11-9, 11-3, 11-4.The Div 2-4 singles was held and number one seed Roger Winkworth was astonishingly knocked out by Pete Grubb who progressed to the final after also defeating Billy Edwards. The other semi final group saw Steve Long beat Sven Lind and Josh Colombi.Long won the final 11-5, 12-10, 11-9. The mens singles was the blue ribband event of the day.In the first Quarter final Charlie Childs the top seed was knocked out in five sets by fifth seed Scott Lawson. Third seed Mike Rhodes beat tenth Kieran Wells in straight sets. Eighth seed Tim Farmer had a good win over fourth Danny Lucking. Second seed Alex Rorke beat ninth Roger Winkworth in straight sets. Rorke beat Farmer 11-6, 11-2, 11-4 in the semi final. Scott Lawson beat Rhodes 11-6, 11-9, 11-5 to reach the final. Rorke won the final with his backs against the wall chopping shots with the occassional surprise attacks-11-5,13-11,8-11, 11-6. The ladies singles was won by Sandra Collier in beating Heather George 11-5, 11-8, 9-11, 11-7.The mixed doubles was won by Sandra Collier and Eric Harvey against Heather George and Roger Winkworth 12-10, 11-9, 6-11, 12-10. The consolation singles was taken by Sven Lind who overcame Pete Grubb in four sets. In the handicap singles semi final Billy Edwards had a 15 start on Scott Lawson, but lost 25-12,23-25, 21-25. In the other semi Lester Miles overcame Tim Buckman with just a one point start winning 21-13, 16-21, 21-19. Miles played superbly in the final to beat Lawson 26-9, 23-26, 26-10 after being given a 17 point start. In the mens doubles number one seeds Charlie Childs and Danny Lucking squeezed home against fifth seeds Andy Bugden and Tim Farmer after saving three match points in the fourth set.In the first semi final the top seeds found the going easier when beating Pete Woodacre and Steve Long in straight sets.Number two seeds Alex Rorke and Scott Lawson beat fourth seeds Roger Winkworth and Robin Plunkett also in straight sets. The final was very tight, but Rorke and Lawson triumphed 14-16, 11-7, 8-11, 11-9, 11-9. _______________________________________________________________________________ Aug 24th 2008 - The 2008-09 Season starts week commencing Mon 29th September.
